Facebook reinvents itself!

I usually don’t care much about Facebook upgrades or its F8 conference. But this year’s conference was something we all might remember as the day when the social explosion occurred. Yes, you can say that Facebook just whipped out an Apple! 🙂

1. Timeline:

Facebook announced a feature called Timeline, that it calls the “story of your life”. In short, it is a single scrolling page which contains much of your existence on Facebook. I don’t think I have ever said this about Facebook or any social network, Timeline is beautiful.  If you are geeks like us and cannot wait until Facebook rolls it out , you can try the developer mode here.

2. Apps and Open-graph:

Timeline is integrated with Apps in a new way. They can be added to your Timeline and when you use the Apps it will show on the recently launched Ticker display on the right. So if Googlechic is listening to a song, the ticker display will say “GoogleChic is listening to New Soul” 🙂 Open graph will usher in a new era of Apps which will increase sharing among users and in turn marketers get more data to use.

Facebook has now “friended” a bunch of media companies like Spotify (and Spotify is sweet!) Netflix, Hulu and all the other big wigs by plugging their technologies into Facebook. It is sitting on this big social gold mine – an explosion of user likes and dislikes. In other words, Facebook seems to be turning into the next Google 🙂

It looks like Facebook may have gotten some inspiration recently and decided to reinvent itself. I wonder if Google+ had anything to do with it? 🙂

I do like the timeline feature but to be honest are you going to go back and post baby pics? Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of everyone knowing what I’m doing 24/7 much less have my entire life story posted online. I actually prefer Andy Samberg’s spoof concept of “I’m not really my friends with these people” bucket and would find that more useful 🙂 How many times have you been friended and felt obligated to accept? That’s one thing I like about Google+’s circle but unfortunately Google+ has not taken off and sad to say I don’t think it will (Applegirl is probably jumping for joy at this point!).

There’s already a preferred social medium out there and it’s really hard for people to make the switch.Bottom line you’ll either love the new FB or find it complicated and hate it 🙂

Tell us what you think!
