Samsung mocking and taking cues from Apple?

Apple and Samsung have been at each others throat with regards to patent infringement in various countries trying to get each other’s product banned. Samsung recently has been mocking with its Galaxy S II smart phone ads. The latest in Samsung’s attempts had been to position itself very close to Apple’s iPad. Samsung’s Korean ad imitates Apple’s iPad ad philosophy much too well. Check it out!

Cheapest Tablets and Deals

If you missed out on HP’s blow out $99 sale for the Touch Pad, nothing to fret! Touch Pad is making a come back one last time (or so HP claims. After all their wishy washy announcements, I wouldn’t be surprised if they announce the resurrection of WebOS soon after). We don’t know how much HP would price the next round of tablets, but let’s hope it’s close to that smashing $99 price range. Here are some other options if you don’t really care for the OS.

RIM announced a $50 discount on Play Book for the Labor day weekend at Best Buy. A 16GB Play Book would cost $449.99 at a $50 discount. Not a huge deal, but clearly Playbooks are not selling.

Amazon’s yet to be released Amazon Kindle running Android with Amazon Cloud Player and Amazon App Store is expected to be priced at $250. I would be interested to see the market dynamics when this one comes out.

The low priced entrants in the Indian tablet market will undercut almost all tablets in the US. Reliance’s 3G Tab at $285, Bharti’s Beetle Magiq at $220, LACS’s $99 tablets and the best priced of all is OLPC’s $35 tablet.

All in all, small gross margins, stiff competition and a lot of blood shed to come.

I can’t end a blog without talking about Apple, right? 🙂 Apple iPad 2s are starting to peek into the refurbished inventory. Currently, they have the fully loaded 3G AT&T and Verizon iPad 2 at $779 after having shed $50 from its original $829.

Right now Verizon is running a pretty sweet deal on certified pre-owned Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab. With a 2 yr contract you can get the XOOM for $299.99 and the Tab for just $69.99.

For just $100 more compared to the discounted XOOM price, you can get an Acer Iconia or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer for $399. Not willing to spend that much, get  a Dell Streak 7 for $279, although you won’t get Honeycomb on that :P.

There’s a lot of good tablets out there. If you’re looking for one hopefully you end up on this side of the fence instead of Apple’s 😉

An iPad 2 for a kidney!

I love my iPad 2 but I wouldn’t trade my kidney for it! A teen, Zheng, from Huaishan City in China wanted an iPad 2, but couldn’t afford it, so he sold his kidney for ~ $3000 to a broker he met online.  Zheng’s mother tried to get in touch with the kidney broker, but as expected he was unreachable. I hope Zheng recovers his health soon and no kid ever attempts to do this again!

Google ChromeBook vs. iPad

Google has officially announced the ChromeBook, with partners – Samsung and Acer. ChromeBook is dual core with 11 to 12 inch display and limited on board storage of 16 GB. Here’s my breakdown on why you should buy an iPad instead of a ChromeBook.

1. ChromeBook boots up in seconds, but so does the iPad (and new MacBook Air too!)

2. On the ChromeBook, your apps, games, photos music, movies are in the cloud and are accessible wherever you go. The same with the iPad. In fact, on the iPad you can do many of the above without an Internet connection.

3. ChromeBook has a long battery life. iPad has a battery life of 10hours.

4. You can have an optional 3G connection on ChromeBook. That’s not a biggie. iPad has been doing it from day one.

5. The ChromeBook looks and feels like a laptop except that it is lighter than a laptop. The iPad is a portable tablet which does all and more than the ChromeBook.

6. The ChromeBook will be priced around $350 to $500. The iPad is thinner, lighter, faster and  starts at $499.

7. The one thing I do like about the ChromeBook is the monthly subscription plan of $20 for students and $28 for business users.  Let’s see how that fares in the market.

8. I like the hardware on GoogleChic’s beta edition Chrome, and of course its not as as slick as the iPad 🙂

Check out our Chrome OS hands on  blog!

Comparing an iPad and a Google ChromeBook is like comparing apples to oranges. They’re nothing a like.

The idea behind the ChromeBooks is cloud computing. It is about the ability to pick up any ChromeBook device and within a matter of seconds being able to log on and have everything already configured to your liking. Unlike the iPad, there’s no need to sync your device to the cloud in order to pull down you music or movies.

In this week’s episode of GPS with Fareed Zakria, Eric Schmidt talks about could computing. Schmidt makes a really good point “as an experiment, turn off all your devices and disconnect from your internet for 6 or 7 hours, you’ll realize how dependent you’ve become on it.” So to AppleGirl’s point, yes there are things that the iPad can do offline but eventually most of what we do these days depends on internet connectivity.

Bottom line, there are pros and cons with both the iPad and a ChromeBook device. It ultimately is dependent on what experience the user is seeking. Personally, I would prefer a Android tablet device. However, if I’m on the go and traveling I’m not going to complain if there is a ChromeBook for me to log onto 🙂

Check out Eric Schmidt’s interview via this link. Forward to 02:37 for info about cloud computing.

New iPad 2 ad!

Have you seen the new iPad 2 TV ad? Both, the new “If you asked” TV commercial and the earlier iPad 2 ad “We believe” humanize the device. Something that other technology companies fail to do. No surprise that Apple was named the most valuable brand for 2011 at $153 billion.

Sold out: iPad 2 replicas!

This one had me ROFL. As much as I was complaining about standing in line to get an iPad 2, Chinese folks in Malaysia are having trouble finding iPad 2 paper replicas. Chinese communities honor their dead relatives by burning fake money or replicas of luxury items such as designer handbags and flashy cars. Now the latest fad is to offer the iPad 2. The stores ran out of the iPad 2 replicas and are only left with original iPad replicas.

Those paper replicas sure looks realistic! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since there is the iPed (iPad knockoff) in the Asian market.

The funniest thing is that the iPad 2 hasn’t even released in the Asia market. I guess the replicas are the next best thing!

Check out the video below. On a side note, check out the designer shirt and shoes 🙂

iPad 2 – the newest iDevice in the market!

Here is our official iPad 2 blog. Steve Jobs plugged in most of the features we had estimated to see on the iPad 2 except for a higher resolution display (or a Retina display). But not to worry, even without the Retina display, iPad is still the best tablet in the market 🙂

1. Size

The iPad 2 will have the same 9.7 inch display but will be 33% thinner than the original iPad and thinner than the iPhone 4 too! Thank you Apple for setting the trend for others to follow.

2. Front and rear facing cameras

The iPad 2 will have two cameras and it supports Facetime. I know GoogleChic will complain about two cameras and video chatting not being new on tablets. But the key is that Apple is building an integrated device line up and this feature brings the iPad up to par with the rest of Apple’s products giving you the best performance and awesome user experience.

3. 1GHz dual core A5 chip, improved graphics processor and a gyroscope

Apple has doubled the iPads processing power with the in house A5 chip along with 9 times increased graphics processing capability and a gyroscope. Say hello to a faster iPad with potential for intensive gaming and navigation.

4. Battery life

Apple managed to squeeze all the new improvements without affecting its battery life. I’m literally on the verge of shredding my Windows Vista laptop for it has a battery life shorter than the shortest lifespan of a MayFly (yes that’s hardly 30 minutes!). A battery life of 10 hours is a welcome relief to me and I’m sure to all of you as well!

5. iOS 4.3
iOS 4.3 has some new features overlayed on the older version of iOS. It will give an improved browser (Safari) performance, wireless music and video sharing with iTunes on your computer, AirPlay to Apple TV from third party applications and web along with letting you choose between using the iPad switch as a rotation lock or as a mute switch. In addition it comes with the Facetime, PhotoBooth, iMovie, GarageBand (the latter 2 Apps cost $4.99 each) specifically designed for the newly camera enriched iPad 2. Are you wondering how iOS on iPad matches up to Honeycomb on an Android tablet? Watch out for our iOS vs Honeycomb battle blog 🙂

6. Smart Covers
If you are one of those visual kinds, you will like this new feature. Apple designed the iPad 2 with a smart cover to protect the iPad’s display. Built in magnets in the iPad draw the smart cover for a snug fit and the smart cover wakes and stands up the iPad. It comes in 10 bright polyurethane and leather covers. We have more inside scoop on the smart covers. Look out for our iPad 2 smart cover blog 🙂

7. Black and White iPad
This isn’t a big deal if you don’t care about the color and care more about the meat inside the iPad. But hey with smart covers, you can actually show off the white iPad.
8. Price
Apple has kept the prices on the iPad 2 same as that of the original iPad. It has a starting price of $499 for the 16GB Wifi only model. Yes, both the black and the white models cost the same! Check out Apple’s site for more model and pricing information. However, if you are counting your pennies, you could get the original iPad (Apple just dropped $100 on the original iPad) Keep in mind that you will get the iOS 4.3 features on the old iPad as well.

9. Shipping
The new iPad 2 is available starting March 11 online as well as at the Apple stores.
Now let’s hear what GoogleChic thinks of the new iPad 🙂
Vodpod videos no longer available.

Like I’ve said before, Apple designs very slick hardware and they’ve done it again with the iPad 2. It’s the thinest tablet out there.

With that said there are some disappointing things about the iPad 2

1. Display

The screen size and resolution remains the same as the original iPad,1024 X 768. More than the screen size, I think a lot of people were hoping for the Retina display.

2. Memory

There was no mention of how much RAM the iPad 2 would contain. Hopefully, more than the 256 MB in the original iPad but I guess we won’t know until March 11th.

3. Camera

Yes, there is now a front facing and rear camera. The rear camera supposedly can record 720p videos, but it takes still pictures at 0.92 megapixel?! No, that’s not a typo, that’s a big OUCH! So pretty much Apple is giving you two holes to go with your iPad 2. I was going to mention that there’s no flash on the iPad 2, but I guess you won’t need it because all you’ll be taking are Mr. Blurry cam pictures.

4. Post PC device

The iPad is suppose to be a post-PC device, but ironically to update the software you’ll have to hook your device up to a PC.

5. HDMI & SD card

It’s not a surprise that there’s no SD card slot. Guess you’ll have to keep syncing it back to your PC ;). As for the HDMI slot, a lot of people asked for it and Apple’s solution is a $39 doggle? From the looks of it, it doesn’t support widescreen?

It’s interesting how Steve Jobs claims that the iPad is a “magical & revolutionary device”.  There’s only a couple of things missing 😉

Just for kicks – iPad 2 is revolutionary?

You know those revolutionary features on the iPad 2? Well here’s exactly how I feel about it 🙂

GoogleChic, a white iPad 2, two cameras and Facetime on the iPad 2 is not revolutionary 🙂 The super sleek design, increased data and graphics processing with the same battery life all at only $499 is 🙂 (Did I mention the smart covers? No one had thought of that before!)

Here is another funny clip from the Conan O Brian show about the new iPad 2.
