Nokia Lumia 900 – just buy it!

Nokia’s Lumia 900 is the phone which is trying hard to vie Android and iPhone users. Not in a blatantly obnoxious kind of way, but in actual content and innovation kind of way. I can’t believe I am saying this about a Microsoft device, but Microsoft has really outdone itself with a fresh new operating system and Nokia brings its hardware forte to the market. The best thing about the phone is that it is essentially free until April 21’st, with AT&T’s bill credit from Nokia! So just bite the bullet and go get it!

1. A well-built uni-body casing –  As an iPhone user I think the Lumia is somewhat bulky, but for those of you who like a solid phone when you grasp it, Nokia Lumia 900 promises to give you that.

2. A fresh new platform – Windows Mango OS. Throw away the Microsoft Windows (Vista) image that you have in mind. Microsoft has decided to pull its act together and come back in a big way. The OS is fast, quite impressive, functional, user-friendly and the features – Local Scout, Threaded Messaging, and Social Networking Hubs actually work seamlessly. If you haven’t given it a spin, you can check out the simulator here and see if you like it.

3. Great deal – Again it’s free 🙂

4. LTE- This is one of those features that actually makes a difference to the user. Coupled with the snappy Windows OS platform, the high-speed network support definitely sweetens the deal.

1. Content – I think this is the biggest hurdle Microsoft/Nokia face. The number of Apps is extraordinarily low compared to that on the iOS or an Android device. However, if the platform attracts enough users and turns out as viable option for App developers it could change the App landscape in the next few years.

2. OS – Windows Phone OS is brand new and there might be some serious gaps that Microsoft has left open and you might just stumble into one. At the same time, the OS is sort of refreshing to use and is faster compared with Microsoft’s other sluggish software or even Android and iOS.

All in all, if you are not yet a smart phone user (Android or iPhone user), then you should check it out! The phone has already topped Amazon’s bestselling list, overtaking Android phones. Recently Nokia pushed a critical update to fix a data connection bug ahead of time (and as goodwill measure they are effectively selling the phone free of cost until the 21st) , which hopefully means that Nokia is dead serious about this phone.

P.S  Nokia/AT&T’s  interesting (idiotic) marketing stunt was to release the phone on Easter day when all the AT&T stores were closed in the US. What were they thinking?!?

Gift Shopping at its best! TJ Maxx has limited supply 16 GB iPad 2’s for only $399 today. October 13, 2011 giving away 50 GB of free storage for iOS users!

If Apple’s 5GB of iCloud is not enough, then check out who is throwing in a free 50GB for iOS users. The deal starts  on Friday 10/14 at 12:01 AM PST and runs for 50 days. All you need to do is download the app on your iDevice and the storage space will be your forever!  With Airplay, you can also wireless-ly stream your content to your TV. I’m jumping from the DropBox bandwagon to the wagon. What about you?

Before HP shut down their TouchPad business, was giving away 50 GB free storage on TouchPads too and DropBox collaborated with HTC to give away 5 GB of free cloud for HTC users. But 50 GB trumps the meager 5GB 🙂

Blackberry Playbook for $249 next week

While many Canadian Playbook vendors have cut prices, Blackberry Playbook price cuts might be coming to the US next week. Crackberry’s tip indicated that a 16 GB Playbook would be on sale between 9/25 and 10/1 at Staples for $349 with a further $99 mail in rebate. This is not comparable to the HP Touchpad ($99) fire sale but I would think a living Playbook is better than a dead TouchPad!

Cheapest Tablets and Deals

If you missed out on HP’s blow out $99 sale for the Touch Pad, nothing to fret! Touch Pad is making a come back one last time (or so HP claims. After all their wishy washy announcements, I wouldn’t be surprised if they announce the resurrection of WebOS soon after). We don’t know how much HP would price the next round of tablets, but let’s hope it’s close to that smashing $99 price range. Here are some other options if you don’t really care for the OS.

RIM announced a $50 discount on Play Book for the Labor day weekend at Best Buy. A 16GB Play Book would cost $449.99 at a $50 discount. Not a huge deal, but clearly Playbooks are not selling.

Amazon’s yet to be released Amazon Kindle running Android with Amazon Cloud Player and Amazon App Store is expected to be priced at $250. I would be interested to see the market dynamics when this one comes out.

The low priced entrants in the Indian tablet market will undercut almost all tablets in the US. Reliance’s 3G Tab at $285, Bharti’s Beetle Magiq at $220, LACS’s $99 tablets and the best priced of all is OLPC’s $35 tablet.

All in all, small gross margins, stiff competition and a lot of blood shed to come.

I can’t end a blog without talking about Apple, right? 🙂 Apple iPad 2s are starting to peek into the refurbished inventory. Currently, they have the fully loaded 3G AT&T and Verizon iPad 2 at $779 after having shed $50 from its original $829.

Right now Verizon is running a pretty sweet deal on certified pre-owned Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab. With a 2 yr contract you can get the XOOM for $299.99 and the Tab for just $69.99.

For just $100 more compared to the discounted XOOM price, you can get an Acer Iconia or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer for $399. Not willing to spend that much, get  a Dell Streak 7 for $279, although you won’t get Honeycomb on that :P.

There’s a lot of good tablets out there. If you’re looking for one hopefully you end up on this side of the fence instead of Apple’s 😉
