Nano iPhone 5 and free MobileMe?

BY THE APPLE GIRL

Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is working on a new lineup of iPhones along with a revamp of the MobileMe services.

According to WSJ the new iPhone 5 lineup will include a smaller size nano iPhone, along with the regular sized iPhone and both are expected to release in summer of 2011.

The new nano iPhone may cost $199 with a two year contract and about one third to half the size of the current iPhone. According to WSJ the source who saw the prototype said the device was significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and had an edge-to-edge screen that could be manipulated by touch, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation.

With Nokia, the global cell phone leader ready to adopt the Windows Phone 7 OS and Android’s increasing number of cheaper phones, it would be a good move for Apple to sell a cheaper iPhone.

Along with the new set of phones, Apple is expected to revamp the MobileMe services. As WSJ put it “Apple is considering making MobileMe a free service that would serve as a ‘locker’ for personal memorabilia such as photos, music and videos, eliminating the need for devices to carry a lot of memory”.

Overall, if your contract is up and you are looking for a new phone, the best advice is to wait for the next iPhone.

If the rumors are true, I would say it’s a smart move for Apple to  try and capture more of the mobile market by offering a more price effective phone.

However, would you want to buy a iPhone that’s half its size? I think this can swing either way. The reason why people like the iPhone is the easy of use and the fact that you can do pretty much anything on the phone. But, with a smaller real estate would  you want to? Maybe listen to music, but  playing games and browsing will be much harder.

As for the free MobileMe concept. WOW, I can’t believe Apple  just thought of releasing this service for free. Right now there’s an annual subscription fee of $99. Ouch! I’m not sure many people would spring for this service. Especially because there are similar services  offered by Google (Google calendar, Picasa) 🙂

Let’s wait and see how this one pans out.

P.S. Nokia, you better move fast, looks like everyone is upping the ante.  (more to come on this)
