Verizon Fascinate -not what we hoped!

BY THE GOOGLE CHIC

Verizon shot themselves in the foot with the Samsung Fascinate! (To be honest, I think someone left their brain at home when they made this decision).  A while back we did a review on the Best of the Galaxy S and our favorite was the Fascinate based on the hardware specs. However, as many of you know,  Bing comes as the default search engine on the phone and it doesn’t allow you to switch the default search engine back to Google. Not to mention, the Fascinate uses Verizon navigation instead of Google’s. What were they thinking?!?! Fascinate is an Android device why would you put Bing on there and mess with the Google navigation which works like a charm. Not to mention, Google search not only searches the web but it searches your phone as well (contacts and apps). I just wonder how many countless development hours Verizon spent messing up something that already works!

The good news is that since Android is open source, there is already a work around to undo what Verizon has done. Set the default engine back to Google. Also, you can just download Google Maps from the Market and you’ll be all set.

Bottom line, I’m very disappointed with Verizon’s decision. Not everyone is going to go to the trouble of figuring out how to default the search engine back to Google. So with the number of Android device on Verizon, I say you just pick something else over the Fascinate. I have to say it’s a shame because the hardware is amazing and that Super AMOLED screen is still to die for!

GoogleChic, you said it all (well almost!) 🙂 To appease the fAndroids Verizon announced that Google Search would be available as an option in Android 2.2 -Froyo (yet to be released on Fascinate)

But its funny that Verizon hasn’t announced when they will let the Fascinate users upgrade to Froyo. You will get an option to download Google Search but we can’t tell you when. Jeez that’s a smart way of saying “Shut up and use the phone as is”. GoogleChic, Fascinate  users have no access to all the “cool new Froyo features” you boasted about (until God knows when!). Bummer!

I can’t believe that after all the Bing drama, with Android purists like the GoogleChic dissing Fascinate, Verizon still won’t let users change the default search browser!

Everyone convinced not to buy the Samsung Fascinate? This is my iPhone shine moment 🙂

Buy an iPhone and you won’t need to fret about software updates like the rest of the Androids. Plus you get a much better search option – Spotlight, and Google Maps too! Apple gives you all the new software updates right away And AT&T has no say in it!

Isn’t it time we stop taking crap from the carrier networks?

The network battle!

BY THE GOOGLE CHIC

Ever wonder about the Android lineup on AT&T? The best that they have is the Samsung Captivate, but compared to its sibling the Samsung Fascinate (soon to be offered on Verizon)  it’s lacking a flash. The flash to me is a simple feature that could make or break someone’s purchasing decision. Other than the Captivate, there is the Motorola Backflip and Dell Aero which I think is a joke! Is AT&T purposely picking less superior Android phones compare to it’s Verizon competitor?

Is this the carrier mobile war? After all, Verizon did launch a Droid does campaign purely targeted at AT&T.  To add to this war, Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy Tab on Verizon.   This will be an interesting battle to keep our eyes on!

GoogleChic, for most people flash is not the deciding factor, an operating system or user interface is! 😀

If you want to turn your back on the iPhone, which other smart phone would you pick? An Android phone? Now if you want an Android phone, which carrier would you go to?  The company that boasts hoards of Android phones and whose campaign slogan is “iDon’t, Droid does”? Verizon has done a good job of dissing AT&T. Is it because Verizon did not get the iPhone deal? GoogleChic, of course everything in the mobile world is related to the iPhone! 🙂

I’m curious to see how it would play out if the popular Verizon iPhone rumor is true! Maybe, Verizon would decide that it would rather make more money by investing in the iPhone than a bunch of Android devices.

If Apple did offer Verizon the iPhone deal, I can certainly say that Verizon would snatch it up like a hungry wolf. After all, Verizon has waited for 3 long years to be served the best meal there is 😉

Best of the Galaxys

It seems like news about the Samsung Galaxy S just keeps on coming. The latest Galaxy S phone, the Fascinate and the last to release on Verizon is now the new hype and is predicted to release sometime in September.

So what’s the difference between all of the Galaxy S phones, other than the obvious fact that it’s on different carrier’s?

Here’s the breakdown and our take on each phone.

Common Features
1 GHz processor
Super AMOLED screen
5.0 Megapixel camera
Android 2.1 (Eclair)

Samsung Epic 4G – Sprint
This is the fully loaded version of the Galaxy S. It sports a full QWERTY keyboard and has a front facing camera, which none of the other Galaxy S has. In addition, it sports a flash as well.
Our take:  The best Galaxy S phone for corporate users who prefer a keyboard to hack out those office emails.

Samsung Captivate – AT&T
The best Android device on AT&T. This phone has a more industrial boxy feel. The downside to this phone is that it’s missing a flash.
Our take: The best Galaxy S phone for users that prefer something other than an iPhone; maybe users that are  stuck on AT&T because your other half has to have the to die for iPhone and you can’t switch providers! (sound familar anyone?)
[Update]: RadioShack is offering a free Samsung Captivate with a 2 year contract with AT&T. This is an awesome deal if you choose to stick with AT&T.

Samsung Vibrant – Tmobile
The higher end Android device on Tmobile. This Galaxy S is also missing a flash, otherwise no complains here; nice phone on a very affordable provider.
Our take: The best Galaxy S phone for parents to buy for their kids that are begging for that iPhone but you just don’t want to pay that hefty bill. Probably since they’re milking you dry already between the food they eat and the clothes that they want to buy 🙂 This is a steal for parents especially if you caught the 1 cent deal that Amazon was running!
Samsung Fascinate – Verizon
The last to arrive and our favorite. It lacks the front facing camera but it does have a flash.
Our take: The best Galaxy S phone for everyday users. This phone is powerful and lightweight (since it doesn’t have the full QWERTY keyboard). It supports Exchange for your office needs, and playful enough for your after work needs thanks to all the apps offered in the Market.
